  • A Look At .410 Handgun Ammunition

I've owned a 3" cylinder model Taurus Judge for a couple years now, I can remember bringing it home and shooting it for the first time. It shot admirably with the .45 Colt rounds but then I got to the .410 ammo. I shot some Remington 2 1/2", #6 shot that first time, the feeling of disappointment really brought me down when it sprayed pellets in what seemed a 10ft. pattern. I also shot some Winchester Super X, 2 1/2", 000 buck, only two out of the four pellets hit my target. Slugs weren't much better. I had pretty much resigned myself to only shooting the .45 Colts out of my Judge, when, I see an ad in a gun magazine for Federal .410 Handgun shells.

I was excited, I just couldn't get my hands on a box of these quick enough, I wasn't disappointed when I did. I bought the 000. This particular Federal, 2 1/2", 000 buck round features four copper plated pellets, and unlike standard shotgun ammo, those pellets are contained in a specially designed, spread control sabot and special shell hull design. That really makes a difference when shooting through the 3" barrel of my Judge. At 20ft all four pellets were hitting inside of a 7" target, usually at a 3" to 5" spread. I can't comment on the #4 shot version by Federal because I haven't shot it, but if the 000 is any indicator, I have no doubt they perform well. Federal now offers these shells in a 3" version, haven't had a chance to test them...yet.

Well, I'm feeling pretty good about the capabilities of my Judge by this time, when what do I hear? Winchester is making .410 handgun ammo.

The Winchester Supreme Elite PDX1 .410 Handgun Defense Ammo....whew...that's a mouth full! This 2 1/2" shell consists of three copper plated "defense discs" (or watch batteries as I call 'em), on top of twelve copper plated BB shot pellets. All contained inside of one of those special spread control sabots. Of course I had to drink the Kool-aid and buy a box. Once again, I was not disappointed as all projectiles hit inside of a 7" target at 20ft. The three discs made an upside down triangle pattern inside of the target's 3" center with the BB shot spreading out around it nicely. As a matter of fact that sabot put a hole in the bottom of the target paper. I was pleased.

So, what did I take away from this experience? Shotgun ammo is for shotguns, .410 handgun ammo is for .410 handguns. Simple as that.
