  • Survival Usage Of Potassium Permanganate

    Potassium permanganate ,otherwise known as KMnO4, is an inorganic substance that has various uses. It can come in crystal, tablet, or powder form. This chemical is an oxidizing agent that can be utilized in water treatment facilities to remove strong odors from water. When properly diluted, potassium permanganate is used to improve the quality of water by reducing organic matter and harmful organisms. Some other common uses of potassium permanganate include industrial, biomedical and as a disinfectant. Because of it's many uses Potassium Permanganate would be an excellent item to include in your survival kit.

    Survival Fire Starting with Potassium Permanganate

    Things You'll Need
    * Gloves
    * Rocks
    * Tinder (leaves or grass)
    * Twigs or wood pieces
    * Potassium permanganate in granular powder form
    * Glycerin ( also called glycerine)
    * Small spoon
    * Eyedropper

    Instructions

    * 1- Locate an area that is away from trees and bushes and create a fire ring.Use rocks to form this ring or circle. Properly clearing a space and forming a fire ring will contain the ash of the fire.

    * 2- Gather a small pile of leaves or grass and place it in the middle of the fire ring. Make sure to use dry tinder. Place small twigs (in tepee pattern) around the tinder.

    * 3- Pour approximately a teaspoon of the potassium permanganate into the spoon. Wear gloves to avoid skin contact with this chemical. Some specialty survival kits may come with a small vial of this chemical. You can also buy it in some hardware stores, a pet supply store that sells fish, or online.

    * 4- Place the potassium permanganate on the tinder by using the spoon. Open the glycerin bottle and use the eyedropper to remove some of the liquid. You can get glycerin in most pharmacies to place in a survival kit.

    * 5- Put three to four drops of glycerin on top of the potassium permanganate. The tinder should start to smoke and then ignite in a few minutes. Once you make fire with the potassium permanganate, begin to add more twigs and small wood pieces to keep the fire going. Use the proper precautions to keep the fire contained in the fire ring and be sure to extinguish it with dirt or water.

    An alternative way to make a chemical fire with potassium permanganate is to combine it with a ground glucose tablet or sugar.

    Use potassium permanganate to purify odors caused by organic matter. This compound has properties known to disinfect the impurities in drinking water. Effective against a number of microorganisms in water such as algae, bacteria, fungi and viruses. Use extreme caution when using potassium permanganate on foods and in water, it's pure form can be toxic and harmful if ingested. It needs to be mixed with water before use in order to reduce its toxicity. This is why Lab Grade Potassium Permanganate is not recommended for water treatment.

    WARNINGS & DISCLAIMER: The methods of using Potassium Permanganate described above should only be practiced in emergency, survival situations.

    Before using Potassium Permanganate for medicinal purposes, ask your doctor if possible.

    In a survival kit, store the potassium permanganate and glycerin in separate compartments or away from each other to avoid an accidental combustion of these two items if these containers break and spill.

    Potassium permanganate should be handled with great care. It is a strong oxidizing substance that should not be exposed to a flame. Keep potassium permanganate away from concentrated sulfuric acid because it can cause an explosive reaction. In its pure form, potassium permanganate is toxic and can cause eye and skin irritations. It should not be inhaled or directly ingested.

    Potassium permanganate is caustic, and concentrated solutions can burn skin. Make sure you fully dissolve the original material before applying it, and only use highly-diluted preparations. Applying a potassium permanganate solution repeatedly also can lead to skin irritation and burns. If any potassium permanganate solution gets in your eyes, it can cause cause irritation, redness and pain. Flush immediately with clean water.

    If you have skin contact with undiluted potassium permanganate, flush your skin with water for at least 15 minutes, if irritation persists, get medical attention. If the substance is on clothing and shoes, remove these items, and wash your clothes and clean the shoes before wearing again. If undiluted potassium permanganate touches your eyes, immediately flush them with water for at least 15 minutes, and then get medical attention.

    Ingesting potassium permanganate can be life-threatening, particularly in high concentrations. It causes gastrointestinal distress and possible burning, throat swelling that can result in suffocation, and it can lead to shock reactions and kidney damage. Even in concentrations as low as 1 percent, ingesting potassium permanganate can cause throat burning, abdominal pain and nausea. If you or someone else has swallowed any potassium permanganate, do not induce vomiting unless medical personnel instructs you to do so, and seek immediate medical attention.

    Although potassium permanganate is not flammable, it increases the flammability of other combustible materials. Potassium permanganate in a fire can release toxic fumes in addition to skin irritant chemicals. Because potassium permanganate is very toxic to aquatic organisms, water used for extinguishing the fire should be collected and disposed of as contaminated material, rather than dumped into drains, soil or water sources. Absorb any liquid with a non-combustible material, such as sand or dirt. This is also a consideration when cleaning up a leak or a spill.

    I (and all sources used in this article) will accept no responsibility for accidents , health damage, illegal use, or property damage as a result of reading this article or the applying of methods described herein.

    Stay safe out there.
