In this article we'll take a look at some smaller framed automatic pistols. Their smaller size allows easier concealment for discreet concealed carry. They also weigh less and are more comfortable to carry than full-sized pistols for some people. You've got your Compacts, they're smaller and easier to conceal than a full-sized pistol but still offer reasonable grip space ,barrel length, and magazine capacity. Next you have the Subcompacts, they're smaller still, with little grip space (although some do have grip extensions for users with larger hands), short barrels, and usually, but not always, single digit magazine capacity. But they're super concealable. Lastly you have the Pocket Pistols. These are so small they can fit in the palm of your hand and can be concealed in a pocket. Which one should you choose? It's really a matter of personal preference, and what you're comfortable with. Having confidence in the make, model, caliber and capacity of your carry firearm is important.
First and foremost, Ignorance of the law is no excuse, no matter how wrong those laws might seem, they're still laws, breaking those laws reflects badly on all responsible gun owners. So be sure to check local ordinances and state concealed carry laws. Most states require a license for concealed carry while some forbid it entirely. Some cities and towns have local laws against the carry of a firearm into or near certain properties. When traveling with a concealed firearm it is also important to check if the state or area you are traveling to recognizes your CCW license, this is called "Reciprocity". Here are some excellent websites that contain everything you need to know about concealed carry licensing, laws, and reciprocity: www.carryconcealed.net www.usconcealedcarry.com www.usacarry.com www.handgunlaw.us www.nraila.org/gunlaws/
Now let's get to the guns.
Beretta PX4 Storm Type F Compact
The PX4 Storm Compact adopts the rotary barrel design of the full sized PX4 Storm pistol, but with a shorter and proportioned slide and grip. High magazine capacity is maintained, with 15 rounds in 9mm and 12 rounds in .40 S&W. *The Compact models accept the full size magazines as well, increasing capacity to 17 or 20 rounds in 9mm and 14 or 17 rounds in the .40. The PX4 Compact also features an ambidextrous safety/decocker and slide stop lever plus interchangeable backstraps for a customizable grip.
Built around Beretta’s latest Px4 modular technology, the Px4 Storm Sub-Compact delivers concealed carry handling with large frame firepower.
Available in two calibers (9mm and .40 S&W), the Px4 Storm Sub-Compact uses a very reliable locked breech and tilt barrel system, providing a more compact and lighter weight system. (does not feature a rotating barrel like full-sized and compact PX4 models)
A stainless steel barrel requires less maintenance and is corrosion resistant, perfectly suited for concealment close to active, perspiring bodies.
The pistol adapts to different hand sizes easily with interchangeable backstraps (included). An ambidextrous manual safety lever is positioned on both sides of the slide for easy access by all shooters.
A reversible magazine release button can be mounted on either side and can quickly be replaced by a smaller and larger size button (optional).
An interchangeable slide catch can also be replaced with an optional low-profile configuration.
A standard Picatinny Rail (MIL-STD- 1913) allows for an array of aftermarket accessories.
The SR9c compact pistol weighs in at 23.40 oz. and features an overall length of 6.85", a height of 4.61", and the same slim 1.27" grip width (across safety levers) as the full-sized SR9. It comes with two magazines that provide options in both capacity and grip size. The standard magazine holds 10 rounds and features a flat bottom butt plate; a finger grip extension floor plate is also included. *The second magazine features a grip adapter and holds 17 rounds, instantly transforming the smaller, compact grip into a full-sized 9mm grip. The 3.50" barreled pistol features an integral accessory rail that accommodates most lights and lasers.
The SR9c compact pistol utilizes the same adjustable, high-visibility 3-Dot sight system as its full-sized predecessor, setting it apart from many compact pistols that rely on fixed sights. New serrations are located on the front portion of the slide, making it easier to both manipulate the slide and to press check the chamber. The SR9c is available with a glass-filled nylon frame and through-hardened slide in either a brushed stainless or blackened finish. State compliant variations are available where necessary and ship with two 10-round magazines.
Just like the original, full-sized SR9, the SR9c has modern safety features like a 1911-style ambidextrous manual safety, internal trigger bar interlock and striker blocker, trigger safety, magazine disconnect, plus a visual and tactile loaded chamber indicator.
