  • Radical Firearms 10.5" 5.56 AR Pistol

    Back in 2015 I decided I wanted a 5.56 AR pistol.
Now being on a tight budget meant I couldn't afford a tier one specimen, so I started shopping around.
I found a 10.5" made by Radical Firearms that fit my budget and had the features I wanted.
Radical Firearms is a firearms manufacturer out of Texas, their AR's come with a lifetime guarantee .
I read that Radical Firearms got a bad rap for some problems with their earlier AR's, but those problems seem to have been corrected in their newer models. At around $525 I was sold. This particular model is no longer made by Radical as they have introduced a newer, updated line of AR pistols.

This model came with a Sig Brace, an over-molded rubberized grip, a 30rd P-Mag, and a free-floating 10" quad-rail. It has a 4150 Chromoly/Vanadium steel, Melonite finished, heavy barrel with a 1:7 twist ending in a standard, A2 style birdcage, muzzle device. The upper and lower receivers are forged mil-spec. Bolt carrier group is military standard, coated with Melonite, with a magnetic particle inspected bolt. M4 style feed ramps for reliable feeding. The lower parts kit is mil-spec as well. This pistol features a carbine length gas-system for improved reliability.
I added the red dot sight you see in the above pic.

I was not a fan of the Sig Brace, too bulky and heavy for my tastes, so I replaced it with a KAK Industries Shockwave buffer tube and Shockwave blade brace. Much lighter and much more easy to handle in my opinion.

After firing this thing for the first time, It felt like Thor had smacked me in the face with his hammer, wow! And boy was it loud. So I bought a KAK Industries Mini-Flash Can and installed it in place of the A2 birdcage. This significantly reduced the concussion and flash from firing by directing the blast down range. However, it did little for the earth shattering noise from firing it. Wear good ear pro!

I added some other accessories of course. A horizonal foregrip with side thumb rest since a vertical foregrip is an illegal no-no on a pistol of this type. I also got a set of flip up Diamondhead back-up sights and a single point sling.

I have the sights co-witnessed with my red dot.

I've had this pistol for three years now, I have over a thousand rounds through it without any problems. It handles and operates smoothly and it's really fun to shoot.
From standing position at 50 yds using Wolf 55gr it did not perform bad at all. Now this target pic was taken in the early days of my ownership of this pistol. I have since tightened those groups up considerably.

Because of the length of the barrel, some ammo weights and types will not reach the proper velocity for optimal expansion in soft tissue. That's why, for self defense ammo, I load Federal MSR 62gr. These rounds are specifically designed to expand at slower velocities.

Most AR pistols chambered for 5.56 are 1:9 or 1:7 twist. The 1:7 twist will allow your barrel to stabilize a heavier 64gr - 80gr bullet, the 1:9 twist should stick with 55gr-62gr. This is also dependant on the length of the barrel.
Other good AR short barrel loads are Speer 55gr Gold Dot, Speer 64gr Gold Dot, Hornady 75gr SBR Black, Hornady 75gr TAP FPD, Black Hills 77gr OTM, and Black Hills 50gr TSX. There are plenty of good self defense rounds out there for AR pistols.

Well, I certainly hope you enjoyed this review and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about it.
    Thanks for reading. - Sasquatch

You stated it was extremely loud. Are there are add ons (not counting suppressors) you can get to reduce the report of this weapon?

I've heard that linear compensators can lessen the boom a bit, but not much, still going to be loud.
Best bet is a suppressor if you don't mind the $200 stamp and waiting period.

The suppressor game is too rich for my blood.
I mean $500-$1000 for the suppressor and then the extra $200 for the guberment permission slip?
      Yeah, that ain't happening.

I am fascinated by his videos and could watch him review and eat ancient rations and MRE's for hours.

    "Nice."
