I don't know much about firearms honestly but it seems that the Mossbergs may be the best bet. I haven't compared price points but all across the board they have the lightest weights with the heaviest model tipping the scales at 7.25 pounds whereas the Remingtons average 7.5 and more. Also, depending on exact model the Mossbergs will hold up to 9 shells and the Remington only 8. I know these are minor issues so it's really a matter of personal choice, they're both great and it's a toss up, I guess price comparison is the real deciding factor.

Well I have owned a Mossberg, it was a Model 500. I owned it for a few years and then I had to have a Remington. I have now owned Remington's for about 25 years. I have an 870 Express Magnum 12 gauge with vent rib, I also have the 870 Wingmaster Magnum 12 gauge with vent rib and full choke (this one is before choke tubes) and I have a Remington Model 1100 12 gauge with vent rib and full choke, another old one. But if you saw my firearm selection you would know that I am a Remington guy. Don't get me wrong I have other brands, but Remington have been my favorite.

I've used both extensively, but own neither. I like the Remington 870, tried and true, but the Mossberg 500 is a venerable design also. What do I own? An H&R Pardner Pump 12Ga. I know, I know, it's made in China. But it's an 870 clone and H&R is now owned by Remington anyways. My Pardner actually shipped from Remington Arms Co. in Memphis, TN. Anything that will fit the 870 will fit the Pardner, except chokes and barrels, it takes Win/Browning/Moss style chokes, and I found a simple way to allow it to mount 870 barrels. You also have to perform a simple mod to fit Mag extensions, not a problem. Best of all it's built really well, and it only cost me $157. I couldn't afford an 870 , I got what I could afford, and I'm happy with it.

Is that 870 clone still available and where did you get it from? Might have to take a look.

I bought it at a local Walmart. It's called the Pardner Pump Synthetic, It has a 28" vent-ribbed barrel, can hold 5, 3" shells in the Mag., and it's drilled and tapped for a scope.
The local Dick's sporting goods has the H&R Pardner Pump Protector, it's the Home Defense version with an 18.5" barrel, I think they want $197 for it.

I've been trying to find a shorter barrel for mine, but I don't want to pay more than my shotgun is worth for a new barrel and I don't want to saw off my existing one. H&R doesn't sell the Pardner barrels, they make you send your gun to them so they can install it, too much trouble. I've found a way to mount an 870 barrel on the Pardner. I'm trying to find a cheap, used 870 barrel, any length, I'll just cut it off to 18.5". I could just break down and buy the Protector, after all, it's actually cheaper than most 870 replacement barrels.

Dish? As in Dish Network? That's pretty awesome! Gotta respect a company that will give you a free gun. Like that car lot owner in Texas that was giving away free AK 47's with new truck purchases.
